Here’s what our clients have said about us:

“The team at Humphries Associates has been helping me with my various businesses and personal accounting activities for about 20 years now and that really says something. I’ve enjoyed the relationship and the easy banter.”

Robert Gardien, Gardien Construction Limited & GK Solutions Limited

“Michael Humphries is an outstanding person and a very fine accountant. He provides a first class service, and he’s been very good to my business and me. Michael is reliable and impeccably honest and efficient.”

Stewart Matthews

“They were always there to assist me and my businesses when it was tough, and I’ve been able to set up a couple of different businesses with their help. It’s hard to name all of the things that they’ve done because there have been so many.”

Kevin May, Integrated Technology Partners NZ Limited

“I can be confident that they’ll take care of all my IRD paperwork without being too ‘creative.’ They do things by the book – everything is black and white – which, I think, is the right way to approach it.”

Christine, Onehunga Jewellers

“They’ve provided my business with an all-round, holistic service that meets our needs. They’ve become an integral part of the team at Waitiri Creek Wines thanks to their ready knowledge and helpfulness.”

Alistair Ward, Waitiri Creek Wines

“Humphries Associates were instrumental in letting us know the legal aspects of taxation and accounting for selling property. My brother and I inherited the business, but we were novices. However, Humphries Associates were able to guide us and let us know how it should be run.”

Christine Inglis

“Many years ago I spoke with an ADA, who advised me to stay as an employee. But after talking to the people at Humphries Associates, I decided to venture out on my own, and I now own several companies with revenues over $10m and over 50 employees.”

Tony Portland

“I would certainly recommend Humphries Associates because they’re very knowledgeable and helpful; you can feel safe with them. It doesn’t matter that they’re located in Onehunga, because they become a part of your business, and Angela has always been very helpful and quick to give me answers when I need them.”

Shalini Cyril

Shalini Cyril

Senior Accountant

Shalini is one of those people who are naturally interested in numbers. That’s why she chose to become a chartered accountant, and has been working in that field for the last ten years. At Humphries Associates, Shalini mainly works in compliance, giving top-level tax and business advice. Shalini’s role is also very client facing, which she loves because it gives her a chance to discuss their needs and make sure they’re met. When Shalini isn’t busy at work, she likes baking and decorating cakes, and is always happy to bring in a freshly baked birthday cake to the office celebration. Running around after two little ones also helps to keep her hands full!

Leanne Jensen

Leanne Jensen

Accounting Technician

It was a rather unconventional path that brought Leanne Jensen to Humphries Associates. Leanne has previously co-owned a building company, so of course she needed to learn all about MYOB in order to run it successfully. After having kids, Leanne made up her mind to upskill and train in accounting, since that was where her real passion lay. After working in accounting for the last 6 years, she’s pleased to report that she still loves it! Leanne assists the other accountants and clients with their paperwork, and generally makes their jobs easier. In her spare time, Leanne is no less committed to challenging herself to learn new things - recently she completed a half-marathon to support the Cancer Society. On a more relaxed day though, you’ll probably find her pottering around the garden or in a café, chatting with family or friends.

Blair Jarvis

Blair Jarvis

Manager

Blair is well acquainted with the nightmares that keep business owners up at night. Since coming to work at Humphries Associates in 1995 (or Smith Humphries, as it was then), he has learnt all about the fears, worries, and responsibilities of running a business, and he's passionate about implementing practical business solutions that his clients will be happy with. He also takes care of IRD issues for businesses, because he knows that you certainly don't want to be in their bad books. Ever since he was young, Blair knew he'd be an accountant because he was a natural with numbers – and anyway, accountants rule the world! After graduating in 1995, Blair started working at Humphries Associates and enjoyed it so much that he never left. Blair prides himself on being a listening ear for his clients, ready to give them advice when they need it. He likes to meet new people, spend time with his family, play the piano at church, and go boating or fishing.

Michael Humphries

Michael Humphries

Director

Michael is the Director at Humphries Associates, a company that he started after working in the commerce sector for a number of years. He previously worked for companies in the Fletcher Challenge group, where he gained significant experience in business management teams. Today, Michael’s primary role is to do coaching and consulting work. Not only has Michael successfully grown Humphries Associates over the years, but he has also offered his expertise to help many entrepreneurs grow their businesses too. Seeing clients achieve great results in their businesses and personal lives is definitely what drives Michael, and he gives his clients the professional tools that they need to grow and become more profitable. There are, as Michael explains, two ways to know when you’ve helped a client. After a while you’ll know intuitively, but often they’ll tell you that you’ve added real value to their business as well. Michael always makes sure to find time for a good work and lifestyle balance. A big part of his life is involvement with his local church, spending time with family, and playing sports. Michael sets aside time to regularly play squash, tennis, and golf, go running, work out at the gym, and even fish.

Yvette Raju

Yvette Raju

Graduate Accountant/Accounting Technician

Yvette is the latest addition to our team at Humphries Associates. She first found her passion for Accounting in high school and is now a Commerce graduate with majors in Accounting and Commercial Law. Yvette thoroughly enjoys being part of the projects and assignments that arise at Humphries. She is motivated to develop her career and is always looking for an opportunity to put her theoretical skills into practice. During the weekends you’ll find Yvette spending time with friends and family. Other weekend activities involve educating herself on her interests which include auto mechanics and photography (that is, when she’s not studying for her Chartered Accountancy Exams!).

Chris Pollock

Chris Pollock

Office Assistant

Chris is an expert hand at making sure that everything runs smoothly around the office. She’s our part-time office assistant, really, and what doesn’t she do? Everything from online banking to printing accounts and preparing documents, Chris is organised enough to make sure it is all done in time and while looking effortless. Previously, Chris lived in Australia and in the Philippines, where she kindly did a lot of volunteer work. Chris came back to New Zealand three years ago, and now she spends her free time looking after her grandkids, enjoying the outdoors, and helping to look after her daughter’s horses.

Angela Kirk

Angela Kirk

Senior Accountant

Turning clients’ records into financial accounts is something that Angela finds really satisfying. There is, she explains, a real sense of achievement in seeing a project through from scratch, and then presenting her clients with a perfectly organised set of records and numbers that they can understand. No more need for that cardboard box. Angela is an expert at preparing financial accounts, meeting clients, filing tax returns, and helping clients with their accounting systems. It’s easy to know if a system has helped, Angela says, because years later the client will still be using it. Accounting is far from Angela’s only passion though. Just like her workmate Shalini, Angela loves to bake. She’s that magical person who always brings in the results of her baking experiments for morning tea – much to her colleagues delight. Angela also has wandering feet, and reckons that her best trip to date was a visit to India where she attended a friend’s wedding.

Susan Jarvis

Susan Jarvis

Communications

Susan currently works as a stay-at-home mum, but because of her strong background in insurance and business systems, we knew that she’d be great at writing our Humphries Associates newsletters. So, as well as her important role at home, Susan works part-time to put our newsletters together, edit all of the content, and get them ready to send out. Her fine eye for detail means that every one of them is accurate, error-free, and looks great (if we do say so ourselves]! Susan is married to Blair, with two children. When Susan isn’t busy looking after the kids and putting our newsletters together, she likes to find the time to go for walks or do craft-related things.

Paul Couch

Paul Couch

Senior Accountant

A welcome addition to the office, Paul has recently merged his client base into Humphries Associates Limited; a partnership that will no doubt benefit from Paul’s 50 years in the finance industry. From 1964 – 1987 he worked his way up in the banking sector, achieving bank manager status before entering the world of Chartered Accountancy. He then went on to join a small CA firm (now absorbed into BDO) and set up his own sole practitioner practice in April 1996. Since then he has been advising clients throughout New Zealand, Australia and has recently supported two New Zealand based companies which are now operated by American based owners. He has come to appreciate the innovation of New Zealanders as inventors; a quality that he is proud to facilitate when expanding and promoting their unique businesses overseas. Managing a sole practice left Paul with little time to catch up on his hobbies, so he is thoroughly enjoying the spare time merging business has afforded him. He now enjoys tending to his large rural section, getting lost on the golf course and keeping active in two regiments within the Territorial Army -an Association which he has served in for 19 years.

She is most at home when she is working with people and enjoys being the first point of contact at Humphries. Grace dedicates most of her free time to community work. She currently holds voluntary leadership roles with the New Zealand Red Cross and coordinates a mentoring organisation for refugee background youth. When not at work or volunteering, Grace is likely to be found spending time with friends and family, finding new and interesting places to eat around Auckland, or planning her next overseas adventure.
